A successful new year resolution requires all the same planning and focus of setting and achieving goals that is required at any other time of year! Just because they are new years resolutions doesn't mean they will be easier, quicker, or that you can cut corners :).

The first thing I always like to look at in setting goals is, "who do I want to be"? From there, I pull out a trusty sample personal development plan, and map out various steps for setting and achieving my goals.

Here's a brief overview of one of my new years resolutions as an example of 'who I want to be':

A goal this year is to get more exercise. It was really easy to quickly proclaim "I'll go swimming 3 or 4 days a week." It was also quickly apparent this was not going to be accomplished as easily as the words tumbled out of my mouth!

Really what I am aiming for is 'to be' healthier and fitter. Swimming is one way to help me on that path. Obviously there are many different ways to approach the goal of being healthier and fitter besides just an exercise regime.

Further, and the most challenging aspects for me to achieve my goal, are that I need 'to be' dedicated, determined, and have discipline.

Aaahhh... those D words! Not necessarily my strong suits, and probably a very good reason why they are great values for me to cultivate :).

A successful new year resolution is a matter of setting a well planned course, taking one step after another, and letting them build on one another... slowly and patiently.

We can do it!

Positive Affirmation

I appreciate my powerful discipline that comes to the fore as I cultivate my goal, and stay with it until I achieve it. Practicing discipline is adding a wonderful enriching aspect to my character and into my life that ultimately allows me a greater experience of freedom.

Structure your own positive personal affirmations that address an important aspect of who you want to be in 2010.

Then affirm and: share your personal affirmations. They can be much appreciated, and powerful reminders for others.

Personal Development Plan

When you make new years resolutions, they are obviously goals based on your specific personal interests, values, hopes and dreams. These are precisely the aspects that take you to your greatest life fulfillment.

There are 5 stages to creating a personal development plan to transport you to your goals. The format follows that of the hero's journey as set out by the scholar Joseph Campbell.

Access all the steps you need for successful personal development planning, and give 2010 every chance to be a 10 out of 10 year for yourself!
