Dr Patch Adams Vision

Patch Adams came to mind in thinking of compassionate people with inspiring personal mission statements worth sharing. I posted a letter to him, asking about his mission statement. It was a big and wonderful surprise when I received a postcard from him at the Gesundheit Institute.

The postcard itself carries an inherently inspiring message and photo.

Patch Adams Postcard

The symbolic photo on the front is a picture of the Peace Quilt given to Pete Seeger from The Boise Peace Quilt Project as thanks for his 'courage, hope, and musical threads that bind our lives together'.

Both Seeger and Dr Adams are activists and leaders in social change. They see great value in working together with others, while upholding ones own highest vision, in order to inspire and bring about positive change.

The quoted message by Pete Seeger below the quilt is definitely in line with the personal mission of Dr Adams:

"The patchwork quilt is really a symbol of the world which must come:
one new design made out of many old designs.
We will stitch this world together yet.
Don't give up."

When I turned this Peace Quilt postcard over, there, dancing on the page was this thoughtful message from Patch:

"Dear Cathy, Thank you for your letter and offer - I am too busy to write something new - I've never used a computer - I think the most thoughtful offering I can make is for you to go to our website and to the Idea part, and take Susan Parenti's 2 papers. This will have people think what can be done 'for example'. Then read my paper.
Thanks, In Peace, Patch"

So, in line with his wishes, please access and read these papers now. Take the ideas with you and lets see if we can cultivate and integrate them in our communities:

  1. Re-designing the US Health Care System by Susan Parenti
  2. Re-designing the Character of the Care Actor by Susan Parenti
  3. Vision for a Free Hospital Based on Fun and Friendship by Patch Adams

BlogCatalog and Bloggers Unite are sponsoring the International Day of Compassion in honor of Dr Patch Adams, on May 15th 2011. It is definitely a fitting tribute for this man so eager to spread love, joy, fun, and compassion.

There are many many ways you can honor Dr Adams and his visionary work on May 15th, and each and every other day too! Just read this quote by Dr Adams which points to the ingredient that he beliefs is the most important aspect of life (and chances are excellent that you too think this is the most important ingredient!). Have fun with your ideas for giving it expression...

"I have lectured maybe 40 million people and have asked them,
is anything more important in our life than loving,
and most agree that loving is the most important thing in life."
